I really like this painting. The jalousie glass and floor-to-ceiling windows reminds me so much of my hometown when I was growing-up, alongside the mid-century kitsch table. The waves were always there, dependable, oddly calming to my soul even when it was stormy. I find the gun to be an interesting sort of Rorschach test. What do you see? I can see its presence indicating one of two things – the man is wanting to kill somebody or the man is wanting to kill himself. He looks out towards the waves, to the sky, somewhere, for God, for reassurance, for guidance.
Indeed, I see a man who hasn’t long for the world.
O faithful Browning,
forgive me for the violence
that you may witness.
