“Happy is he who hath the power to gather wisdom from a flower.”

Let’s start with Basho:

When I look closely

nazuna is blooming

beneath the hedge.

The nazuna, otherwise known in English as the shepherd’s purse, is an easily overlooked flower. Often it is denigrated to the weed category. We are quick to speak of traditionally beautiful flowers like roses, tulips, hydrangea, and so on with the tendency to ignore all others. Of course, this is not to say that our carefully controlled gardens should be overrun by plantings that do not fit the grand scheme.

Each plant, animal, person, and so on sharing our existence is a precisely carved puzzle piece. The nazuna, positioned in the hedge. . . just right.
